The award-winning Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service in Solihull, West Midlands, has recruited a new clinician to its specialist-led anaesthesia department.

Diego Castinerias, who graduated from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2004, has joined the Linnaeus-owned specialist referral hospital after 18 months at the Royal Veterinary College in London.

Diego has gained great experience working on both sides of the Atlantic in Argentina and Europe.

After graduating, he completed a one-year part-time anaesthesia internship at the University of Buenos Aires teaching hospital before moving to Europe in 2005, working as a general practice vet for two years both in the UK and Spain.

In 2009, Diego began a one-year rotating internship Willows’ fellow Linnaeus practice, Southfields Veterinary Specialists in Essex, and, in 2013, enrolled in a three-year residency and master’s degree in anaesthesia and analgesia at the Royal Veterinary College.

He then moved to Fitzpatrick Referrals for two years, where he was responsible for setting up the anaesthesia department.

After a short time back in Buenos Aires as a freelance anaesthetist, Diego returned to the UK to join the Royal Veterinary College before moving to Willows, which has just been voted ‘Best Referral Vet 2021’ and ‘Best Veterinary Hospital in West Midlands 2021’ in the recent Best UK Vet Awards.

Diego said: “I’m very excited to have joined Willows, as I thoroughly enjoy working in busy multidisciplinary hospitals and dealing with very challenging cases

“I have a particular interest in loco-regional anaesthesia techniques as a way to improve the patients’ experience in the peri-operative period by providing the most effective way of treating acute pain and minimising the possibility of the development of chronic pain conditions.”

Willows managing director Toby Gemmill said: “We’re delighted Diego has joined us as a valuable addition to our expert team.”

Outside of work, Diego enjoys the cultural life offered by big, cosmopolitan and culturally eclectic cities such as his hometown Buenos Aires and London and is now looking forward to exploring Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Willows, which is part of Linnaeus, offers specialist services in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, clinical nutrition, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery and spinal surgery.
