A renowned multidisciplinary small animal hospital has launched the only full-time specialist oncology service in the north east of England following the appointment of one of the industry’s leading oncology specialists.

Wear Referrals, in Bradbury, County Durham, has just welcomed Aaron Harper, a European and RCVS specialist in oncology, who also holds the RCVS certificate of advanced veterinary practice (small animal medicine), to its award-winning hospital.

Aaron has made the move north from Wear’s fellow Linnaeus referral centre Southfields Veterinary Specialists, in Essex, and will lead the newly-created oncology service, working alongside the hospital’s diagnostic imaging, internal medicine and surgery departments.

During his time at Southfields, Aaron established the oncology residency programme before becoming the Head of Medical Oncology.

Aaron began his career in general practice in North West England back in 2008 after graduating from the University of Cambridge.

He said: “I am really excited to be joining the team at Wear and launching the oncology service here, working alongside some hugely experienced and dedicated clinicians in other disciplines across the hospital.

“It’s a great opportunity for both myself and Wear to offer referring vets, clients and patients a vital, often lifesaving, service.

“My particular areas of interest are in haematological cancers and the medical management of these conditions.

“I am also interested in the use of novel therapeutics in small animal cancer patients, along with the management of side-effects in these cases and my research to date has been on this subject.”

Aaron is particularly passionate about treating feline lymphoma and has spoken extensively on a variety of medical oncology topics at local and national CPD events. He currently sits on the BSAVA Congress Programme Committee and the ECVIM Oncology Exam Committee.

The new service at Wear will see the hospital accept oncology referrals in dogs and cats, including common conditions such as lymphomas, mast cell tumours and sarcomas, as well as investigations of suspected tumours.

Ben Harris, clinical director at Wear, said: “We’re delighted to have a specialist of Aaron’s quality and experience joining the team here at Wear.

“Aaron brings with him a wealth of experience. He is a very talented clinician and has worked alongside a number of well-respected oncology specialists.

“His arrival and the launch of an oncology service here at Wear benefits our multidisciplinary approach and ensures our team can work seamlessly under one roof to provide the best possible care for our patients, clients and referring vets.”

Wear specialises in providing expert multidisciplinary care, including anaesthesia, oncology, orthopaedics, soft tissue, internal medicine, cardiology, intensive care and diagnostic imaging.
