Toby Gemmill, an RCVS and EBVS European specialist in small animal surgery, Fellow of the RCVS and managing director of two of the UK’s top veterinary referral centres, has been re-elected to serve a second term as chairman of the AOVET European board.

Toby, who is MD at Linnaeus-owned Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service, in Solihull, and Kentdale Referrals, in Cumbria, will remain in the AOVET post until July 2022.

He said: “Having felt honoured to have been elected to this post in the first place, I’m delighted to have been chosen to continue in the position for another year.

“My main focus has been to position AOVET as a global leader in the provision of postgraduate orthopaedic education and, ultimately, to improve surgeons’ understanding, decision-making and technical abilities, for the benefit of the patients under their care.

“A key part of the role is to organise and oversee AOVET courses, and we also work to develop new educational material and train younger surgeons to become faculty. I will continue to champion, promote and highlight this important work.”

Toby, widely acknowledged as a key figure in the veterinary referral world, has been with Solihull-based Willows for 16 years, becoming MD last year, when he also assumed the same role at Kentdale.

He added: “I have been with Linnaeus since the company was founded and have spent many years working at Willows, so to be managing director both there and at Kentdale is hugely satisfying.

“At both centres, I am concentrating on maintaining our commitment to providing the best possible levels of care to our patients, pet owners, and referring vets.”

AOVET is one of the four clinical divisions of the AO group (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen), a global organisation dedicated to improving patient outcomes in orthopaedics through research, education and community development. The other clinical divisions are for human orthopaedics and include trauma, spine and craniomaxillofacial surgery.

Willows offers specialist services in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, clinical nutrition, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery and spinal surgery.
