From Monday 6 February, a new TV show on BBC One will be following the patients and team at Wear Referrals, a specialist multidisciplinary small animal hospital in Bradbury, County Durham.

Called 24/7 Pet Hospital, the 10-part series will be broadcast every weekday morning at 10am until Friday 17 February. Its cameras had full access to the hospital, covering services such as orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, neurology, intensive care and oncology.

The team at Wear treat a range of animals throughout the programme, from hip replacement surgery on a Shih Tzu to extracting corn on the cob from a boxer and helping an owl injured by a car. The series also follows the pet owners who travel from across the UK to access the care offered at Wear.

Ben Harris, Wear’s Clinical Director, has been filmed for the show. He said:

“Opening our doors to the BBC will help us to show the public what happens in a specialist veterinary hospital when a pet is unwell – and highlight the incredible care they receive by vets, nurses and support staff. The programme follows all aspects of our work, from initial consultations to the moment pets are reunited with their owners.

“We are all very proud to take part in 24/7 Pet Hospital and celebrate the important work the veterinary profession does every day.”

Helen Munson, BBC Daytime Commissioning Editor, said:

“I can’t wait for our viewers to meet the staff and patients at the Pet Hospital. Get ready for some heart-warming telly as we look at the incredible expertise and loving care that goes into making our beloved pets well again.”

Co-commissioned by Helen Munson for BBC One Daytime and Aisling O’Connor for BBC England, 24/7 Pet Hospital is produced by Twenty Six 03, a Gateshead-based production company.

Twenty Six 03 executive producers Duncan Gray and Antonia Hurford-Jones said: “The team at Wear do incredibly important work and we are so grateful to them for allowing our cameras this unprecedented access to their surgery.”

Wear specialises in expert multidisciplinary care including anaesthesia, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, intensive care, internal medicine, neurology, OOH emergency and critical care, oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue.
