One of the north-west’s leading small animal hospitals has seen its neurology service continue to blossom after the appointment of a new clinician with a passion for botanical orchids.

Rory Fentem has just joined Linnaeus-owned Northwest Veterinary Specialists (NWVS) in Runcorn, having started his career after graduating in veterinary medicine from the University of Liverpool in 2017.

Following a period at a small animal practice, Rory then undertook a rotating internship in Surrey at fellow Linnaeus hospital North Downs Specialist Referrals (NDSR) and subsequently completed a residency in veterinary neurology at the University of Liverpool earlier this year.

It was during his residency that Rory developed particular interests in neuromuscular disease and spinal surgery, carrying out clinical research into status epilepticus and cerebrospinal fluid sampling.

In his new position at NWVS, Rory’s key responsibilities will include management of both medical neurology and neurosurgical patients.

Rory, who is currently studying towards the diploma examination from the European College of Veterinary Neurology, said: “I’m very pleased to be at Northwest Veterinary Specialists, a highly regarded animal hospital with an incredibly knowledgeable team.

“I’m also looking forward to learning new techniques and ideas from my colleagues, plus meeting plenty of new patients and their owners.”

Outside of work, Rory enjoys walking his two rescue miniature dachshunds as well as travelling and gardening. He also has a small collection of botanical orchids which he hopes to expand!

Prue Neath, clinical director at NWVS, welcomed Rory to the team and said: “We are delighted Rory has joined NWVS as we continue to invest in highly skilled professionals.

“Rory has a real passion for neurology and will be a valuable addition to our wide range of specialist-led services that enable NWVS to provide a high level of care to all our patients.”

NWVS is one of the UK’s leading specialist-led animal hospitals. It offers care in anaesthesia and analgesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
