A lecture course in India has proved a major success for two veterinary specialists at one of the UK’s leading animal hospitals.

Matt Gurney and Carl Bradbrook, from Linnaeus-owned Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Winchester, Hampshire, spent six days delivering expert advice on small animal anaesthesia and analgesia to veterinary colleagues from across India.

The event was organised by Dr Sumanth Bedre, of the Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) task force in India, and featured a four-day course in Otty and two days in Goa where Matt and Carl highlighted their Zero Pain Philosophy.

Matt, hospital director at Anderson Moores and RCVS and European specialist in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia, said: “It was a whistle stop tour but very enjoyable and very well received.

“There was a real appetite to engage from our colleagues in India which helped make it such a rewarding experience for Carl and myself.

“We had originally planned a lecture tour in Thailand with WVS back in 2020 but unfortunately Covid put paid to that, and so I put forward some online lectures instead.

“That’s why we jumped at the chance when a visit to India was suggested. It gave us the chance to deliver the lectures in person and it went so well that we’d love to go back and build on the success of this first course.

“It was a wonderful experience. India is such an incredible country and the people there are so warm, friendly and welcoming.”

Carl Bradbrook, who is clinical director at Anderson Moores and a fellow RCVS and European specialist in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia, continued: “It was certainly a full-on few days. We discussed anaesthesia monitoring, the use of different anaesthetic drugs and gave a demonstration of epidural/spinal anaesthesia.

“We also addressed nerve blocks, incisional block, peritoneal block and pain management in dogs and cats, as well as the use of different anaesthetic combinations in various clinical conditions, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and constant rate infusions (CRIs).”

Organiser Dr. Sumanth Bedre was very impressed and said: “I sincerely thank Dr Gurney and Dr Bradbrook for conducting the workshop and helping our resident vets to improve our in-house practices and protocols.

“The participants gave us an overwhelmingly positive response on the course.”

Dr Sheela Jadhav added: “Matt and Carl were amazing and readily answered all our questions and cleared our doubts.

“The sessions on CRIs, local anaesthesia and nerve blocks, and anaesthesia in compromised patients were very useful. Their Zero Pain Philosophy will really help us to deliver ethical pre and post-op pain management.”
