Exam success for a vet at a leading Somerset animal hospital has seen him join the top echelon of his profession.

Cave Veterinary Specialists’ Oliver Gilman has successfully passed his ECVS diploma exams to become a European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery and further boost the hospital’s expert surgery team.

Oliver said: “I feel deeply honoured that I’ve joined such a select group of veterinary professionals, many of whom have provided inspiration to me as I’ve progressed my career.

“I’m delighted to have passed and look forward to continue helping patients and clients along with the rest of the team at Cave.”

After graduating from the University of Bristol in 2015, Oliver worked in primary care practice in Somerset for 18 months before embarking on a rotating internship, followed by a surgery internship and then a ECVS residency in small animal surgery before joining the team at Cave in 2022.

While Oliver enjoys all aspects of surgery, his main interests include brachycephalic airway syndrome, laparoscopy and thoracic surgery.

Clinical director at Linnaeus-owned Cave, Nele Van den Steen, said: “Our congratulations go to Oliver whose hard work and determination has seen him pass his exams with flying colours.

“He’s a credit to Cave and the veterinary profession and he’s now able to call himself a specialist, which is no mean feat.”

Cave offers comprehensive, specialist-led services in anaesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedic surgery and soft tissue surgery.
